I don't know about you, but I always find the greenhouse to be a quiet space, and I'm longing for the weather to change so that I can get in there and begin planting seeds and generally pottering around. Although, it's a place where you can go even if the wind is blowing, when the temperature is still in single figures outside, it's not too inviting... So in anticipation of those days where heady scents of home grown tomatoes, and basil fill the air, I've been working on some greenhouse inspired illustrations instead. Also, in an effort to slow down and try to get away from so much screen time, I decided to illustrate the Watering Can in Holbein Acrylic Gouache, it's a brand I haven't' tried before, I'd read several reviews about how good they are, so I treated myself to a few tubes and I have to say they were lovely to use and I really enjoyed the process.
So whatever you are doing this weekend, I hope it's a relaxing one!

This weekend celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the TV show Dr Who... with the blue Tardis Police box a familiar sight in all the programmes... So in celebration of all those old police boxes, some of which can still be seen around city centres, here is an illustration inspired by the only surviving box to be found in Sheffield City Centre on the corner of Surrey Street. The City of Sheffield originally had approximately 120 such boxes, introduced in the late 1920's they served as a point of contact for both police and public, with the one on Surrey street remaining in active service until the 1980's. Nowadays though you will often find them successfully repurposed for a range of uses including Ice-cream stands, ticket offices, but the one that really caught my eye on a recent trip to Scotland, was the one found on Princes Street in Edinburgh... I thought it looked Fab! What a great use of a small space; that's definitely what I call thinking outside the box!
If you'd like to see more Sheffield Landmarks, check out my Illustrated Map of the City...or if you would like an illustration of your own favourite places and spaces please get in touch... Oh and by the way, Yes! before you ask, I was one of those children that watched Dr Who from behind the sofa! Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery is one of those places that I love to stop by whenever I get the chance to visit Nottingham. It's such an iconic building, that when I was working on a recent illustrated map of Nottingham, it was one of the places that I just had to include. Opened back in 2009 this contemporary art space is always inspiring, I confess I don't always understand some of the work exhibited, but it is always a thought provoking experience...not only do I enjoy viewing the exhibitions, I can't leave without browsing in the gallery shop and, I usually find myself making my way down to the Ottar cafe on the ground floor, where they serve a refreshing cup of tea! But it's not only the inside space which is interesting to me, it's the way Architects Caruso St John, placed this building in the landscape, located in the Old Lace Market side of the city amid Georgian style townhouses it definitely stands alone as a modern building, however the concrete Facade of Verdigris scalloped panels cast with a Nottingham lace pattern, help to create that sense of connection between the old and the new... So if you get the opportunity to visit Nottingham, this is one place that I can really recommend for you to see. It's closed on Monday's though so just bear that in mind...you can find it at Weekday Cross, Nottingham NG1 2GB.
